# Jermain Defoe Resigns as Woking Head Coach After 116 Days
Jermain Defoe has left his position as head coach of Woking FC, resigning less than two weeks before the National League club's 2026–27 opener against Sutton United, after just 116 days in his first permanent managerial job.

### A statement that names no specific cause

Defoe announced the exit on Instagram, saying he had mutually agreed to leave and that unspecified "circumstances" had made it impossible to continue. He called his four months at Woking an "eye-opening managerial experience" and said he had felt the club was building something the players and supporters deserved. He thanked chairman Todd Johnson for the opportunity and said he was "genuinely gutted" for the squad he was leaving behind.

The statement did not identify what those circumstances were. That omission left a gap that Woking's own staff moved quickly to fill, at least in part, with a very different framing.

### Woking's director of football disputes a recruitment rift

![Defoe made 496 Premier League appearances as a player Mike Hewitt/Getty Images](/uploads/1784884110719-0ff29279-cb24-4d30-aaaf-0627b0854d4b.webp)

Reports circulating on social media suggested the exit followed tension over player recruitment and rejected trialists. Director of Football Jody Brown addressed this directly on X, stating that Defoe controlled recruitment throughout his tenure and that every trialist brought to the club came through Defoe's own contacts. Brown also rejected suggestions that the club had failed to deliver on promises made to Defoe, saying the club met every request asked of it and that further detail would emerge "in due course."

Woking's official club statement struck a more measured tone, thanking Defoe for his contribution and confirming the club remains focused on its season ahead, but it stopped short of detailing the disagreement either. Between Defoe's vague "circumstances" and Brown's specific denial, the public record currently offers two accounts that don't fully reconcile, and neither side has said more.

### Six games, a mid-table finish, and an unresolved ambition

Defoe was appointed in late March 2026, succeeding Neal Ardley, and took charge for six matches to close out the 2025–26 season: two wins, three draws, and one loss, including a 5–1 win over Morecambe and a 3–0 win at Gateshead. Woking finished 10th in the National League. His final game in charge was a 1–0 pre-season friendly defeat to Braintree Town this July.

When he took the job, Defoe spoke publicly about ambitions to lead Woking into the English Football League. A 10th-place finish and a squad still being assembled for a new campaign leave that goal unmet, and his departure now hands the task of building toward it to whoever replaces him with the season already close to kickoff.

### Reaction from outside the club points to a rougher transition than expected

Former Rangers teammate James Tavernier was among those who reacted publicly to the news, part of a wider response across English and Scottish football framing Defoe's exit as evidence of how differently ambition and lower-league administration can collide. Coverage since has centered less on the results than on what the mismatch between his public statement and the club's response suggests about the working relationship behind the scenes, a question that remains open until either party says more.
